Picks & Pans: Mining in Ghana
February 2000 by Don BuckI recently returned from Ghana, West Africa. My time there was not a two-week tourist trip, but rather a time to discover the real Ghana, and to determine if I might have a future there in the mining business. I stayed almost three years.
Direct investment overseas by Chinese companies rose 27 percent over a year earlier to $3.6 billion in 2004, highlighting the country’s growing economic influence, the government reported.

John Kerry’s proposal to increase mineral royalties to raise money for national parks has drawn strong opposition from officials and mining interests in Nevada, which produces 81 percent of the nation’s gold.
Upon first entering this district in the early 70s, the trip into the Petersville area by vehicle was risky at best, especially during rainy periods in summer. The road has been improved somewhat since then, but not much.
With history so often repeating itself, you can’t go wrong searching for gold using modern exploration techniques and exploration theories in regions of historic gold activity.
