Some media outlets have speculated the hoard of coins came from a theft at the old US Mint in San Francisco that was reported in 1901.
A quartz piece was rolled over and there it was, staring right at us—beautiful, coarse gold coming right out of the quartz rock. It was almost the size of a softball, and it looked like over one quarter of it had gold throughout!
Over the past twenty or more years, the traditional “seat of the pants” science of using mineral identification tables as a means to identify common ore minerals, their associated rock-forming minerals and rocks, has slowly become a lost art.
