In the early 1860s, the rich mines of Virginia City and the surrounding area were pouring forth millions of dollars in gold and silver each year. Additional mines located at White Pine, Aurora, Humboldt and other Nevada locations were also yielding millions in gold and silver.
The University of Nevada, Reno, and the Department of Mining Engineering at the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, have teamed up to provide an online course in mineral processing.

Throughout the colorful history of mining, reviews of old documents and stories have led to new mineral discoveries.
Although the potential for fortunes to be made from the commercial mining of this rich glacial gravel conceivably exists, so far no large mining company has shown any serious interest in it.
