Sampling Mineral Deposits
March 2007 by StaffThe accurate sampling of mineral deposits for testing and analysis is perhaps the most important step involved in both mineral exploration and development. It is a critical factor in initial prospecting efforts and the preliminary investigation of grassroots exploration projects, yet sampling is often performed in a haphazard and incomplete fashion during the early stages of prospecting and exploration activities.
Mapping geology underground is not difficult if one knows the procedures. This article presents the procedures that will allow any miner to produce a geologic map of their workings.
Once indicators start showing up along or below a contact I start to get excited. When I have shale, and outcroppings of diorite with iron-red, gritty soil and some clay thrown in, I really get lightheaded. I may be a mile away from the nearest diggings but that’s okay. I just found a spot that could provide some nice nugget hunting.
It turns out the old Anaconda Co. really did have 10,000 miles of tunnels beneath this mining city. That’s one of the findings by researchers who have produced a new map that charts the thousands of underground mine shafts here, providing a detailed look at some of Butte’s mining history.

If there was ever a month for the financial markets to rejoice, the one just past would appear to have been ideal. Oil prices declined sharply...the Fed revved up the economy by smashing short-term interest rates to their lowest levels since World War II...and, perhaps most important of all, the Republican Party now has possession of a clean sweep of American political power, controlling the Presidency, Senate and House while Conservatives dominate the Supreme Court.
Last month, in “Following Clues to a Hidden Gold Deposit,” I ended the article with the direction that we were on the hunt! We were getting prepared and ready to roll with our detectors, then snow came, and lots of it. We had already found the seam diggings mine on the mountainside in wild, rough brush and trees. It had been well hidden.
