Placer gold was found near South Pass, at the south end of the Wind River Mountains, in 1842, and lode gold was discovered in the same area in 1867. The principal gold rush was between 1867 and 1874.
The Treasure Hawk mine was operated by "Crazy Eddie" Bounsall from 1972 until 1988. He died in 1994, and I purchased the Treasure Hawk claims from his wife Betty in 1996.
As we approached the river the view was outstanding and the sight was encouraging. A ravine coming down on the right side had been worked heavily, with rock piled back on each side. That surely meant there was gold somewhere close.

In the old days, each miner staked his claim, and in lode prospecting, the end result was often that one mining company grew up out of each of those individual claims and several different mining companies would often be working on...
