Gold production was concentrated heavily in the Sierra Nevada foothills in the northern part of the state. However, the high mountainous region of eastern San Diego County was the site of a number of productive hardrock gold mines, notably in the late 19th century.

One of the best-known placer gold localities in southern Arizona is at Greaterville, 45 miles, by road, southeast of downtown Tucson. The site of mile-high Greaterville is in grasslands and oak woodlands, on the east flank of the Santa Rita Mountains.

There are a number of Tertiary river channels in the area, most of which trend south-southwest. They tend to be steep, narrow, and rich with coarse gold.
Because these crevices catch and hold gold so well, it's worthwhile to learn how they form, which ones are good for catching gold and which ones are not.
