This is the intelligent way to start modern prospecting. The value of literary research yields challenging outings, specimens, history and geologic research.
There is one rule of thumb when prospecting for gold in Alaska: You’ll find your best pay in southern-sloped exposed ground. This is not to say there’s no gold on northern exposed gulches where the sun has trouble reaching it and limited melting occurs. It’s harder, and more time consuming, to look for easy prospects in northern exposures.
Arizona is better-known for copper than for gold, but there are a number of dry placers in the western and southern parts of the state. A prolonged drought at the time of this writing has made the placers the driest they have been in recorded history. A good gold panner can find colors in many gulches and benches, far more than those that have been described in reports.

This article deals with copper exploration, but it is relevant to exploration for other minerals. I will use the geology of the Copper Creek area in Pinal County, Arizona, as an example.
