The Goldhill Mining District
October 2001 by Sam E. Phifer, P.G.Following the initial discovery of gold in North Carolina in 1799 on the Reed Plantation in Cabarrus County, gold was found in about 1842 in Rowan County at a locality that soon acquired the name Gold Hill.
We decided to check some spots that were pretty good to us on previous trips. The detector was deceptively simple with few buttons and auto-ground balance.
Geologists have long noted the similarities of certain types of mineral deposits all across the globe. Similar minerals, similar country rocks, and similar grades of mineralization may occur in several different parts of the world.
The names attached to these areas came about from many sources. Many are easy to see why the name was given while others had a more contrasting note to them.
