When you think of gold mining, you probably don’t consider Alabama to be the place to find your treasure. However, in the early 1800s, jobs were few, and the smell of gold drew men into the search. History records 13 districts in which mining was done at all stages—from pick and shovel, to an area like Hog Mountain.

The Forest Service wants a two-year ban on new hard-rock mining claims on 429,000 acres of national forest land on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains in Montana.
America’s reliance on foreign imports for minerals and metals continues at an alarming rate. The US Geological Survey reported that the US imported $132 billion in nonfuel minerals and metals in 2006.
