Gold in Mono County, California
June 1999 by Edgar B. Heylmun, PhD
Lode gold and silver mines and prospects can be found in many parts of Mono County, from the Sweetwater Mountains on the north to the White Mountains on the south, and at elevations ranging from 5,000 to 12,000 feet. Mining activity on the rugged east flank of the Sierra Nevada is now severely restricted, especially in resort areas and where lands adjoin Yosemite National Park.Ask The Experts

The Fire Assay of Fly Eyes
Colorado-Utah-Wyoming oil shale was first reliably discovered to contain gold and silver by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1920s. Although most of this vast shale resource, up to 1,000 feet in thickness, contained nil or barely detectable values, many brown shale samples fire assayed here over the past thirty years have yielded up to 0.02 ounces per ton (opt) Au and 2.0 opt Ag.
