John Frémont was a man whose luck regularly swung from one extreme to another. At times he seemed to be the luckiest man on earth, yet he sometimes made bad decisions that got him into a considerable amount of trouble.
The whole purpose of sampling mineralized ground is to measure the values in a small volume of material that would be representative of a much larger volume of similar material. The key word is representative. Chemical and fire assaying will not accurately represent placer deposits by themselves.
I hope this case inspires some of you. It shows that miners can and do succeed when they are persistent and well-prepared, even when representing themselves against state and federal attorneys in a court of law.
The potential exists for small-scale placer mining in these pits using a trommel and sluice box or other similar types of equipment.
Honda Motor Co. said it will begin using new catalytic converter technology it believes will slash use of pricey precious metals in auto emission-control systems by 50 to 70 percent.
