The mining and logging camp of Zeballos (pop. 272) is located on an arm of Esperanza Inlet, on the southwest side of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Vancouver Island is 301 miles, by road, and reaches elevations as high as 7,249 feet.
On Saturday, January 27, 2007, six of us began a trip to Pickering Bar on the North Fork of the American River. It was 7:30 am and we had our engines running to begin the first leg of our two and a half hour trip to get there.
It was June 6th, 1999 at 7:00 am when I started hiking to the river with my final load of dredge equipment. Hearing the flow of water in the South Fork of the Yuba River and the call of birds up and down the canyon, I added some whistles of my own just to annoy the nearby birds.
