Placer Gold in Utah

Utah is not known for gold, but a significant amount has been produced. Over 12 million ounces of lode and placer gold have been produced from Bingham Canyon alone. However, placer production, per se, has been miniscule compared to other western states, although a lot of dry placers may remain undiscovered.

Altar District's Golden Lure

The Altar District of Sonora, Mexico, stretches nearly 300 miles along the American border and approximately 200 miles along the Gulf coast. This particular district was noted for its rich placer deposits and gold ledges before the Spaniards ever settled the region. Several antiguas (Spanish mines) were later developed by the Europeans and were again being operated by the Americans as early as 1904.

The Manson Mine. That’s what they called it in Ballarat in 1969. The name stuck even after Crazy Charlie Manson and the girls got hauled out of California’s Panamint Range behind Ballarat in handcuffs and ended up in prison for the Tate-LaBianca murders.

The Livengood (pronounced with a long “i” as in alive) gold stampede was the last of the great Alaska Gold Rush. The string of gold rushes began in 1886 with the Fortymile gold strike, and ten years later with the large Yukon Klondike goldfields discovery.
