Placer Gold Deposits of Utah
December 2018 by Chris Ralph
The placer deposits of Utah occur in two distinct types of environments. These are 1) placers found adjacent to, and derived from, gold, silver and base-metal deposits; and 2) placers found in major rivers and derived from unknown, distant sources.
The technique I will describe is a much safer alternative and it works. It’s a fine-gold panning technique that eliminates the need for mercury amalgamation of most placer samples.
Prospectors have many reasons why they might want to break rocks. These include dividing up a specimen too large to carry.
Your odds of going home with gold will be higher using the discrimination mode, even if you might have misread one of the targets you rejected.
