Gold and Mining Stocks Will Rebound—But When?

There is no question the economy will not always be as good as it is now. There is also no doubt that someday the lack of exploration and the ore in existing mines running out will come home to roost.
If precious metals miners and prospectors were looking for a series of dramatic events to usher in the first two weeks of 2016, they have not been disappointed.
It is difficult to look at unrestrained growth in such important monetary indicators without becoming concerned about the future stability of America's economic system.
It appears that market softness due to a slowing Chinese economy may already have affected precious and base metals quotes.
A report from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) titled "Public Rewards from Public Lands—Fiscal 1998", shows that minerals production is the largest income producer for the federal government on BLM-managed lands.
The Federal Reserve just reported that inflation exceeded their 2% target for the first time in five years and the University of Michigan reported their inflationary expectations have now risen to 2.7%.
I hope long-term readers would agree that while your columnist does occasionally carry some arguments to an extreme length, I usually stay within the bounds of reason. I am pointing this out because I was struck by an economic vision a few days ago that could test those bounds.
Banking problems continue to find their way into the world’s financial media, and we note below that another nation, Slovenia, is now grabbing attention with a banking crisis of their own as well as a downgrading of their national bonds by Moody’s Investment Services.
