I particularly enjoyed this little expedition. It is always nice to get out and spend time with my father, Bud Herschbach. He has taken a liking to Mills Creek and was anxious to return and look for more nuggets.
Honda Pares Down Use of Precious Metals in Autos
Honda Motor Co. said it will begin using new catalytic converter technology it believes will slash use of pricey precious metals in auto emission-control systems by 50 to 70 percent.
Carr Fire Gold
After burning more than 350 square miles, the Carr Fire near Redding, California, was finally out. Luckily our home was spared, and I had the opportunity to go metal detecting in burned areas previously too overgrown to access.
The South Pass Gold Placers, Western Wyoming
In the 1980s, I spent 5 summers living in a tent in order to map the 450 mi2 South Pass granite-greenstone belt and many of its historic mines. While mapping, I was quite impressed by the general lack of development of lode gold deposits.
Shortage of Mining Engineers Projected
As decade-high gold and silver prices spark a renewed interest in mining in the West, there are few mining education programs and fewer students earning mining engineering degrees due to two decades of decline in the US mining industry.
Know Your District
We have to remember that the earliest miners were not geologists, but came from a variety of backgrounds. Their survival depended on finding enough gold so they worked hard and adapted to whatever challenges these new areas presented.
Northwest Miners Rally a Success
This year’s rally worked extremely well with over twenty exhibitors and four seminars on various aspects of mining running throughout, as well as active river demonstrations of equipment. The hands-on approach, allowing people to try the suction dredges and power sluices, recovered well-distributed fine gold.
