This mine was a real wonder of engineering, and the water supply and drifts had to be carefully managed to keep it in operation. In fact, it didn’t close due to lack of gold, but instead closed with the fall of the Roman Empire.

In the 1800s, rich silver and gold mines along the eastern Sierras were supplied from Los Angeles by a wagon road with an important stage stop at Freeman Junction. Wagons carrying the gold and silver back from the mines to Los Angeles followed the same wagon road. A cottage industry of robbery arose where numerous individuals made a living holding up these wagons and making off into the hills with the loot.
Smaller exploration and development companies, many of which were international, were driven out of the US during the Clinton era and are now looking for signs that it’s safe to come back. Policy changes, rising metal prices, a weakened dollar and a more positive hiring forecast may be the most attractive set of signs the industry has seen in years.
Apart from the hard rock mines, there are abundant gold-bearing placers, especially in the areas in and around Oriental Wash.
