Picks & Pans: Prospecting at Mills Creek, Alaska
March 2000 by Steve HerschbachI particularly enjoyed this little expedition. It is always nice to get out and spend time with my father, Bud Herschbach. He has taken a liking to Mills Creek and was anxious to return and look for more nuggets.
Tabling and jigging are two relatively inexpensive methods of recovering the “free particle values” from the noble metal ores. However, not all ores contain their values as free particles. In fact, many gold ores contain appreciable amounts of “metallic gold salts,” some of which readily dissolve in the system water and continue to migrate right along with it.

The signal I was hearing was coming from a vertical bedrock crack on the bank of the creek. I removed my backpack, took out my crevicing tools and started to clean out the crack when I saw a glint of gold.
In the first part of this article, we took a look at the special geology required to form coarse gold. In the second part, we looked at field examples of coarse gold occurrences and the geology of residual placers.

Indians used asphalt from oil seeps in California for caulking boats and other objects long before the white man arrived. Spaniards noted seeps as early as 1542, and the Portola expedition in 1769 used oil for wagon axles and as a fuel. Spaniards also used crude stills for obtaining lamp oil for use in the missions.
