Picks & Pans: Prospecting at Mills Creek, Alaska
March 2000 by Steve HerschbachI particularly enjoyed this little expedition. It is always nice to get out and spend time with my father, Bud Herschbach. He has taken a liking to Mills Creek and was anxious to return and look for more nuggets.

Actually, this mid-range gold zone can exist in any eluvial placer field with a shallow zone where the ground “tightens up” below the loosely packed surface dirt to harder packed dirt. However, its presence depends upon several factors:
- Sun continues to set on solar
- Obamacare ailing
Geologic maps generally appear complex and daunting, and certainly some are. However, many have information hidden within their bright splashes of colors and patterns that can aid the prospector who takes the time to study them.

The last item on our “crisis agenda” may be the most important of all, perhaps because it may be the most unpredictable.
These gifts of nature are all unique to say the least. Any large nugget is an added blessing to the long toiling hours a miner puts in on his claim. Each golden clunker found is an added bonus. And each big one found will be discussed around the dinner table, or the fireplace.
