Gold in the Chinle Formation
May 2004 by Edgar B. Heylmun, PhDThe Chinle Formation, of Triassic age, underlies about 100,000 square miles in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. It adds to the scenic grandeur of the great Colorado Plateau province, noted for its high cliffs and deep canyons.
It is not just a few small-scale prospectors who use a home office. An increasing number of miners, prospectors, and mining-related business owners are operating at least a portion of their business from a home office.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has added some useful tools to their website. The Land and Mineral Use Records system has been meshed with a map viewer that allows users to obtain mining claim information in a useful format.
Lode gold and silver mines and prospects can be found in many parts of Mono County, from the Sweetwater Mountains on the north to the White Mountains on the south, and at elevations ranging from 5,000 to 12,000 feet. Mining activity on the rugged east flank of the Sierra Nevada is now severely restricted, especially in resort areas and where lands adjoin Yosemite National Park.
Sometimes a placer miner will find small bits and nuggets of metal associated with gold and other heavy minerals in his concentrates, which exhibits a silver-gray color rather than the normal tones of gold.
