May 2004 by Edgar B. Heylmun, PhDThe Chinle Formation, of Triassic age, underlies about 100,000 square miles in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. It adds to the scenic grandeur of the great Colorado Plateau province, noted for its high cliffs and deep canyons.
Since the cycle of water flow is dominated by excessive and sudden “gulley washers” after downpours typical of desert country, there is a tendency to spread gold values out in the alluvial fans and not have placer gold concentrations more typical of big river deposits.
Within the arid desert regions of the American Southwest and Western Australia, drywashers have proven to be a simple and inexpensive method for concentrating placer gold. Drywashers are not limited to desert operations...
In retrospect, I can now see that the thoughtless breaking of one of my safety rules regarding not dredging alone was to be a lesson I won’t soon forget.
