The most obvious benches are usually near the valley floor, but they can be thousands of feet above the valley floor. Since benches were made by streams, they can contain placer deposits.
Geologists have long realized that the vast majority of gold in typical quartz veins is in the tiny, dust-size range, a lot smaller than the gold nuggets found by placer miners. This is common worldwide in many, many gold districts.
The Crescent Creek placers are considered to be one of Utah's few commercial grade placers, but they are marginal and difficult to work at a profit.
