Claim Staking Rush Northern Quebec, Canada
March 1999 by Kenneth Harn...at least 10 junior mining companies have been busy pounding stakes in the ground of northern Quebec in hopes of claiming rich nickel deposits.
Two miners were killed in an accident partly because someone wedged a broom handle against a reset button to bypass an alarm that would have shut down the system, federal safety investigators said.
In some ways, silver is the forgotten precious metal because it straddles both the world of precious metals and jewelry, while having many important industrial applications like a base metal. The price of silver reflects both the precious metal investment demand as well as the industrial demand.
The settlement did not grant an immediate approval for the project, but it did begin to clear the way for the company to apply for federal permits—a path the Obama administration previously had thwarted.
The historical AJ mine, located east of Juneau, Alaska, was considered the largest gold mine in the state at one time. Joe Juneau and Richard Harris struck gold there in 1880, and it has been more recently known as a tourist destination.
The mine will be open for public tours Saturday and Sunday afternoons beginning August 24, lasting into the fall and winter as weather permits.
Please note that new mining claims filed on or after September 1, 2019, will be subject to the new fee schedule.
The need to bring mining back to North America is more urgent than ever.
