Tonopah Historic Mining Park

For just a few bucks admission you’re on your way. Shawn will give you a map of the 130-acre park, and you are free to explore on your own. There are just a few areas that are fenced-off for safety concerns, but most of it is wide open. It is a refreshing change to view a mining museum/park such as this.The Carissa Gold Mine, South Pass, Wyoming—A Sleeper?
The Carissa is part of a patented group of claims (private property) near South Pass City in the southern Wind River Mountains of western Wyoming. The mine lies a short distance southeast of State Highway 28 which runs north to Lander and provides excellent access to the area.
Extracting & Smelting Your Gold
Unfortunately, not all the gold that we prospectors find is pretty, or appealing to the eyes. They are not all nice, bright, shiny nuggets with lots of character that carry high collector value.

There are numerous old mercury (quicksilver) mines in the central Coast Ranges of California, from San Benito County on the south to Lake County on the north, a distance of 225 miles.
New Life for the Suction Nozzle
The suction nozzle was one of the first Venturi nozzles to be used in the dredging business. Years later it was replaced with the straight Venturi system, which is sometimes referred to as a “log.” The main benefit of the log is that the operator only needs a suction hose with a short nozzle.
Residual Placers: An Often Overlooked Gold Source
Because the forces of erosion and gravity tend to carry lighter materials like quartz away more easily, the heavy minerals like gold or silver will tend to be concentrated in the general area around the vein outcrop. These concentrations are what make residual placers so attractive.

As we approached the river the view was outstanding and the sight was encouraging. A ravine coming down on the right side had been worked heavily, with rock piled back on each side. That surely meant there was gold somewhere close.
