Gold Hill, Utah


The Gold Hill (Clifton) mining district is located 162 miles, by road, west of Salt Lake City. All but the last 12 miles of road is paved. The settlement of Gold Hill (pop. 10) lies at an elevation of 5,321 feet in desert mountains, the highest of which, Dutch Mountain, is 7,800 feet above sea level. Ponderosa pine grows at the highest elevations, with a zone of pinyons and junipers below that.

Montana Multiple Use Association Backs Miner


The case is Fortner & Montana Multiple Use Association v. Broadwater County Soil Conservation District, Cause No. DV-04-45. Fortner is a miner who owns patented mining claims in Confederate Gulch in Broadwater County.

Within this area, about two million ounces of gold and fifty million ounces of silver have been mined. Faults, dikes, veins and fissures that carry the ore form a concentric radial pattern—like spokes on a wagon wheel—around the caldera core.

The South Pass Gold Placers, Western Wyoming


In the 1980s, I spent 5 summers living in a tent in order to map the 450 mi2 South Pass granite-greenstone belt and many of its historic mines. While mapping, I was quite impressed by the general lack of development of lode gold deposits.
