Don Eno, a well-known miner and prospector in Plumas National Forest, is the Public Affairs Director of the Lost Sierra Mining & Historical Association and the Northern Office for Public Lands for the People (PLP). He was issued a citation for violating Forest Order 03-98—“camping for longer than 30 days per calendar year...”
I hope long-term readers would agree that while your columnist does occasionally carry some arguments to an extreme length, I usually stay within the bounds of reason. I am pointing this out because I was struck by an economic vision a few days ago that could test those bounds.
For Maria McCracken, the quest for gold has been a life-long experience. Maria runs the New 49’ers Prospecting Club in Happy Camp, California, along with her husband Dave, and Gerry Westerkamp. But lately her focus has been on silver.
Because tungsten minerals are heavy, exploration can be done using stream sediment samples. Prospectors looking for gold have found scheelite or wolframite in their placer concentrates, and in some cases this has led them to make important tungsten finds.
The Lucky Friday is already one of North America’s deepest hard-rock mines. Now, the 62-year-old mine is about to get much deeper.

The $800 million project will provide 300 jobs during production. It will be the only US mine where nickel is the primary targeted mineral, with about 360 million pounds to be extracted.
