Iowa Hill District

For the last two years we’ve held a hands-on prospectors training session in the Iowa Hill district of California’s Mother Lode country as a part of our Gold Prospecting and Mining Summit event. Because of this, I thought it might be good to take a look at the history, geology and opportunities that the Iowa Hill district still offers to the individual prospector.

Lightning Creek, British Columbia

Lightning Creek is one of the famous placer gold streams in the Cariboo district of east-central British Columbia, Canada. It is 445 miles, by highway, north of Vancouver, some 50 miles east of the town of Quesnel (pop. 8,500).

Authorities filed criminal charges against one of the largest gold refiners in the United States, accusing the company of participating in an illegal, $4.5 million money-laundering operation involving tainted gold from South America for at least four months.

Golden Age of Gold Dredges

Over one hundred years ago, gold mining in California saw a radically new method tried out in the major rivers of the Central Valley. Large gold dredges floated lazily but noisily on the waters, bringing up the rich gravel from deep below. With none of today’s environmental restrictions on such methods, the landscape was reworked into a maze of patterns along the rivers.
