Estimating the gold content of ores with gold, quartz and other minerals?

I don’t know what to do next. Should I get an assay of the quartz? Can you recommend someone? Should I somehow crush the rock & search for a gold vein? Am I just wasting my time?

During the Indian Wars in 1874, General George Custer and his men camped on French Creek in the southern Black Hills, near the present site of Custer, South Dakota.
