Blackberries and Gold
August 2018 by Ray Mills
There were iron stains all over and even a few places where I could see iron trash sticking out of the bedrock. These would be ideal spots to start with as the gold travels with the iron and lead.
I didn’t think too much of our dredge hole and we were both considering a move when we hit bedrock. There was a good quantity of flakes and fines, but no nuggets.
...it's very refreshing to hear that some of our youth will learn of the value of mining without all the environmental spin.
I knew the nuggets got into the nugget patch somehow, I just had to figure out how and from what direction they came.
Back at the entry point of the mine, we took turns slowly crawling down the slope leading into the mine portal with our metal detectors, hard hats and flashlights. The mine was hand dug and is about 75 yards long.
Here's the kicker—for every lost flake there was a five minute penalty added to the time. Lost gold generally meant you didn't make it past the preliminaries.
Science has shown, over the past few centuries, that there is a direct correlation between certain plants and their geophysical surroundings.
