Even with the decades of mining and exploration, much of the Comstock is still underdeveloped and its potential not fully tapped.
Apart from the hard rock mines, there are abundant gold-bearing placers, especially in the areas in and around Oriental Wash.
Bob “Neverquit” Abendschein’s article on his “Special Rock” in the December 2006 issue was short and to the point. As Neverquit and I are old friends, I sent him e mail:

The first experience involved an overgrown gold mine operated during the 1880s. A razed mill adjoined the mine and could be glimpsed from the isolated public dirt road I was traveling.
Mining conferences frequently reflect specific types of information as their focus, and our publication was recently represented at two such contrasting gatherings, the Manitoba Mining and Minerals Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba and the Northwest Mining Association Convention in Spokane, Washington.
As we traveled through the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas we saw the combination of mining towns in stagnation but otherwise, incredible displays of prosperity.
