How Far To The Gold?
December 2021 by Chris Ralph
…in spite of the fact that the well-pounded spots probably don’t have much gold left, I see all too many prospectors hike down to a creek or other spot at the first place the road comes near it just because it’s the easiest access point.
The question I had, and likely you have too, is when an old channel is cut, how far does the placer gold in the cut channel move down in a river or creek that continues to erode deeper and deeper?
I made my way up past where I left off and the wash was going to end in about 100 feet. It was then I got a sweet signal.
...I decided to excavate the semi-frozen high-bank that was resting on a soft shale bedrock footing. Within three feet, I encountered an intrusive!
Most prospectors understand placer mining a lot better than hard rock mining and don’t realize the amount of work that goes into processing different types of hard rock ore.
I didn’t follow-up on this opportunity at that time, as I already had as much on my plate as I could handle, but the potential for this property has never left my mind.
“I heard him hollering down in the hole as soon as I got there,” he said. “I was just glad to see him alive.”
My third sample location proved to be my last and most interesting. I needed to look no further.
