About Us - Our Staff
Scott grew up with prospecting in his blood. His grandfather, Herb Reid, had a cabin and mining claims on the Trinity River in Northern California, and was the editor of the Journal from 1966-1979.
Scott's parents, Ken & Kathy Harn, ran ICMJ's Prospecting and Mining Journal for twenty years, from 1979-1999. Scott worked for the Journal during his high school and college years, and then returned, with his wife Sally, to purchase the magazine when his father announced his intent to sell the Journal and retire in December 1999.
Scott spent thirteen years in law enforcement in northern California as a police officer, training officer, police corporal, acting supervisor, juvenile crimes detective, property crimes detective, and special investigations detective working undercover for three years, prior to purchase of the magazine. He received a Lifesaving Award, but is most proud of the Law Enforcement Medal of Valor that he received twice during his career. The first Medal of Valor was for his actions following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and the second for successfully rescuing an unconcious child from a fully-engulfed apartment fire.
Running ICMJ's Prospecting and Mining Journal takes up much of his time, but Scott also enjoys spending quality time with his wife Sally and three daughters, playing and coaching soccer, and dredging and detecting for gold. Scott is committed to getting regulatory relief and regulatory certainty for miners across the United States.
