Legislative and Regulatory Update

September 2021 by Scott

Critical minerals addressed in infrastructure bill
With the Afghanistan fiasco taking center stage, there hasn’t been much happening in DC in relation to mining. However, H.R. 3684, the “Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act” recently passed by Congress contained a few items related to the production of critical minerals.

Most of the items are related to the usual studies and reports that Congress perpetually asks for along with mapping and research grants, but there is also a mandate to federal agencies to find ways to “expedite the permitting of activities that will increase explorations for, and development of, domestic critical minerals.”

The bill also includes ten grants of up to $10 million each for domestic critical mineral processing pilot projects.
