  • From the Editor

As we all get back to “normal,” or as close to it as we can, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our advertisers for sticking it out through the hard times.
  • Guest Editorial—Exploiting Tragedy

While the world is focused on the war on terrorism, rumors persist that sinister forces inside the beltway are looking for ways to attach a train-load of pork to an emergency appropriations bill.

  • Placer Gold in Utah

Utah is not known for gold, but a significant amount has been produced. Over 12 million ounces of lode and placer gold have been produced from Bingham Canyon alone. However, placer production, per se, has been miniscule compared to other western states, although a lot of dry placers may remain undiscovered.

  • Picks & Pans: Working the Ol' Paystreak

The bright yellow nugget caught my eye as I pulled the astroturf down the sluice box into the large plastic tub. I grabbed it from the mat, pretty much in shock because of its size.
  • High Country Dredging in Kaufman Creek, Colorado

I opened the front door of my house at 5:00 AM to find it raining hard and water standing in puddles all over the driveway. Just great! It hadn’t rained for 3 weeks, and on the morning we were leaving for a weekend dredging trip, the weather decided to change.

  • Altar District's Golden Lure

The Altar District of Sonora, Mexico, stretches nearly 300 miles along the American border and approximately 200 miles along the Gulf coast. This particular district was noted for its rich placer deposits and gold ledges before the Spaniards ever settled the region. Several antiguas (Spanish mines) were later developed by the Europeans and were again being operated by the Americans as early as 1904.
  • The Manson Mine

The Manson Mine. That’s what they called it in Ballarat in 1969. The name stuck even after Crazy Charlie Manson and the girls got hauled out of California’s Panamint Range behind Ballarat in handcuffs and ended up in prison for the Tate-LaBianca murders.
  • California State Gold Panning Championship Results

The seventh annual California State Championships started off with a roar and it never ended until the champions were named at the end of the two-day event. The setting was perfect. The event was being held in the historic mining town of Foresthill, northeast of Sacramento.
  • Gold in Panama

Panama is a long, narrow isthmus, 30,200 square miles in area, that separates Costa Rica from Colombia. It is best noted for the Panama Canal, which is now under the control of the Panamanian government, aided by the United States. The canal bisects the country and is an engineering marvel that was opened in 1914.
  • Melman on Gold & Silver

Exactly one month ago—to the day—I was watching in stunned silence, along with billions of others around the world, as the immense tragedy of September 11 played itself out. Since that time, the President has issued a virtual declaration of war; actual attacks against the Taliban strongholds in Afghanistan have begun and the “other side” has threatened an escalation of terror.
